Eastern Cape Health hands over 26 new ambulances

The Eastern Cape Department of Health is handing over 26 new ambulances on today in East London, as part of efforts to strengthen emergency medical services across the province.

The ambulances form part of a broader rollout of 195 vehicles involving the Department of Health, Government Fleet Management Services and the Eastern Cape Department of Transport.

The programme seeks to address challenges including an ageing fleet, frequent breakdowns and lengthy repair times, particularly in rural communities.

The department previously received 21 ambulances on 21 August, while 14 had already been deployed in the Sarah Baartman District, alongside patient transport and response vehicles.

More ambulances are expected to be added to the fleet through March 2027, including temporary replacement vehicles to minimise disruptions when ambulances are undergoing repairs.
