The Nyandeni Local Municipality has expressed its condolences following the deaths of four initiates during the current initiation season, urging communities to unite against illegal initiation schools.
The deceased were from KwaMbiza (Ward 18), Nomadolo (Ward 23) and two from Mangwaneni (Ward 17). Preliminary reports indicate two initiation schools were registered, while two were operating illegally, with one of the deceased reportedly just 14 years old.
The municipality said the initiates suffered complications, including dehydration and severe swelling, although the exact causes of death are still under investigation.
“The journey to manhood should never become a death sentence for our children,” the municipality said.
Nyandeni called on traditional leaders, government, law enforcement, parents and communities to work together to eliminate illegal initiation schools and prevent further deaths. It also extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
