If you think Matatiele is quiet about “Mabahambe” campaign think again.
Meetings aimed at mobilising residents and encouraging community participation in the campaign have already begun across Matatiele.
One of the meetings was held on Sunday at Harry Gwala Park in Area C, where community members gathered to deliberate on the way forward and discuss the actions they believe should be taken.
Attention is now turning to a larger meeting scheduled for Monday at the park below the bus rank. The meeting, set to begin at 08:30, is expected to bring together community members from different villages, traditional leaders, stakeholders and representatives of law enforcement agencies.
According to campaign organiser Mzwakhe Pauleni, the gathering will provide clarity on the next steps for the people of Matatiele.
“Law enforcement agencies have also been invited to the meeting. The meeting is at the park below the bus rank at 08:30,” Pauleni said.
Meanwhile, Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia addressed the media on Sunday, confirming that a nationwide security mobilisation is underway ahead of planned protests and public demonstrations.
Cachalia warned that the state would not tolerate violence, intimidation or criminal acts and said protest organisers could be held civilly liable for any damages or injuries resulting from unlawful conduct.
He also instructed all Provincial Commissioners to enforce the law without fear or favour and to respond swiftly and decisively to any incidents of incitement, violence, intimidation or criminality.
The developments come as anticipation grows over the direction the “Mabahambe” campaign will take following Monday’s meeting, with community members expected to outline their demands and future course of action.
