President Cyril Ramaphosa has commended the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda for their swift response to an Ebola outbreak after the World Health Organisation declared it a public health emergency of international concern.
“I commend the Governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda for their swift leadership and transparency,” Ramaphosa said, highlighting early detection, rapid reporting and decisive action as key to containing the outbreak.
He also praised the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organisation for coordinating regional support and strengthening response systems across affected countries.
“I further commend neighbouring countries that have moved rapidly to strengthen preparedness, cross-border surveillance and emergency coordination,” he added.
Warning of regional risks, Ramaphosa said: “Ebola does not respect borders,” urging stronger cooperation, rapid information sharing and improved surveillance at points of entry.
He called for continued investment in health systems, saying Africa must strengthen preparedness to prevent future outbreaks and protect vulnerable communities.
