Shock return! Temba Bavuma set for stunning T20 comeback in Europe after SA20 snub

In a dramatic twist that has sent shockwaves through cricket circles, Temba Bavuma is set to return to T20 cricket for the first time since April 2024, marking an unexpected new chapter in his career.

The Proteas captain, long seen as a Test and ODI specialist in recent seasons, has signed with the Ghent Gladiators in the newly launched European T20 Premier League, a move that has stunned fans given his limited involvement in the shortest format.

Bavuma last featured in a T20 International for South Africa in September 2023 and has not played any T20 cricket at any level since April 2024. His absence from the format was further highlighted when he went unsold in the last two SA20 auctions, raising questions about whether his T20 career had quietly faded into the background.

Now, in a bold and unexpected turnaround, the 36-year-old has embraced a fresh opportunity abroad, stepping into European franchise cricket at a time when many believed his T20 days were behind him.

Despite the surprise move, Bavuma insists the decision is carefully aligned with his international responsibilities.

“It is the offseason for me,” Bavuma said. “Since it does not clash with any ODI or Test commitments, I’m happy to indulge. My priority will always be Test and ODI cricket for as long as I hold the responsibility of captain.”
