The Eastern Cape Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Investigation Unit is urgently appealing to the public for assistance in locating a person of interest, Lukhanyo Mekula, who may be able to assist investigators probing a deadly mass shooting in Gqeberha.
The shooting occurred on 26 April 2026 in Wells Estate, where gunfire erupted, leaving three people dead and six others seriously injured in one of the latest violent incidents to shock the Eastern Cape community.
Police confirmed that the injured victims are still receiving medical treatment in hospital as investigations into the attack continue.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the motive behind the shooting, but investigators are intensifying efforts to trace Mekula, who is believed to have information that could help solve the case.
The mass shooting has raised renewed concerns over escalating violent crime in parts of Gqeberha, with residents calling for stronger police intervention and increased visibility in hotspot areas.
