Rhodes University students are raising concerns about the possible impact of the institution’s 2027 fee rules on registration and access to student accommodation.
The concerns follow an interim court order that halted protests against the new rules at the university.
The Eastern Cape High Court in Makhanda granted Rhodes University the order on 30 September, after students spent two days protesting and blocking university entrances.
The new rules require self-funded undergraduate students with outstanding fees to pay at least 50% of their debt before registering. Students using payment plans must pay a minimum of R3,000 per month.
Students without confirmed NSFAS funding could also lose access to university residence if they remain more than R25,000 in arrears after making the required payment.
The SRC has instructed students to comply with the court order and is preparing its response to the university’s application.
The broader dispute remains unresolved, with the matter scheduled to return to the Eastern Cape High Court on 27 October 2026.
