The Chief Whip of the Matatiele Local Municipality has died. Cllr Nomonde Nkukhu was 53 years old.
The family confirmed that Nkukhu died yesterday after a long illness at her home in KwaMzongwana village, Matatiele.
In a statement, Mayor of the Matatiele Local Municipality, Patrick Motlalepola Stuurman, announced her death and described it as a profound loss to her family, the municipality and the communities she served.
Stuurman said Nkukhu served as a member of the Municipal Council and carried the important responsibility of Chief Whip of Council.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Cllr. Nomonde Nkukhu. We have lost a colleague, a public representative and a member of the leadership of our municipality who dedicated herself to serving the people of Matatiele,” said Stuurman.
The mayor said Nkukhu worked alongside other municipal leaders in carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to them by the communities they represented and in advancing the developmental agenda of the municipality.
“Her passing leaves a void within our institution and among those who had the privilege of knowing and working with her,” he said.
Stuurman extended his condolences to the Nkukhu family, saying the municipality’s thoughts and prayers were with her relatives during the difficult period.
“At this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with the Nkukhu family. We pray that they are granted strength, comfort and courage as they mourn the loss of their loved one.”
The mayor also extended his condolences to Nkukhu’s friends, colleagues and the communities she served.
The municipality has called on the people of Matatiele and the broader community to keep the Nkukhu family in their thoughts and prayers and to stand with them as they mourn her passing.
Further information regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be communicated in consultation with the family.
May the soul of Cllr. Nomonde Nkukhu rest in eternal peace.
