First Group of Ghanaians to depart South Africa amid voluntary repatriation programme

The first group of approximately 300 Ghanaians is expected to depart South Africa on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, as part of a voluntary repatriation programme initiated by the Ghanaian government.

The group forms part of nearly 800 Ghanaian nationals who have reportedly expressed a desire to return home due to safety concerns and the current political climate in South Africa.

According to reports, the repatriation process includes security screening and registration conducted at the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria before passengers board chartered flights arranged for the evacuation.

The Ghanaian government has fully funded the operation and urged citizens requiring assistance to contact the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria for support.

The repatriation follows weeks of diplomatic tension between Ghana and South Africa after concerns were raised over alleged xenophobic attacks targeting African migrants.
