Vryheid man jailed to 30 years for murdering teenage girlfriend

A 30-year prison sentence has been handed to a Vryheid man who murdered his 17-year-old girlfriend after she failed to spend Valentine’s Day with him.

The Vryheid Regional Court sentenced Asanda Fakude on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, after he pleaded guilty to the murder of the teenager, whose body was found at Gegund Farm within the Vryheid policing precinct.

According to evidence presented before the court, Fakude had invited the victim to spend Valentine’s Day with him on 14 February 2026. When she did not accept the invitation, he became enraged.

On 16 February 2026, Fakude confronted the teenager, and the argument turned deadly. He repeatedly assaulted her until she died from her injuries before dragging her body to nearby bushes, where he concealed it.

The crime remained undiscovered until 18 February 2026, when Fakude contacted the Commander of the Paulpietersburg SAPS Detective Unit and confessed to killing his girlfriend.

Police immediately arrested him, and he later led investigators to the spot where he had hidden the victim’s body during a formal pointing-out.

He was charged with murder and remained in custody throughout the court proceedings. Fakude later pleaded guilty, resulting in his conviction.

On Tuesday, the Vryheid Regional Court sentenced him to 30 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder.
