Two suspected armed robbers were shot and killed, while a third was injured, during a shootout with police in KwaMsane shortly after midnight on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.
According to police, officers in Hluhluwe responded to a report from a man who had been robbed by armed suspects in the Hluhluwe policing area. Acting on information provided by the victim, police quickly identified a vehicle matching the description of the suspects’ getaway car travelling southbound on the N2.
A high-speed chase ensued, with members of the uMkhanyakude District Task Team joining the pursuit to assist local officers.
The chase continued into KwaMsane, where the suspects allegedly opened fire on police, resulting in a shootout. Three suspects were initially believed to have been fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire.
However, while forensic experts were processing the scene and taking photographs, one of the suspects regained consciousness and was immediately transported to hospital under police guard.
Police recovered three firearms from the suspects. Authorities have confirmed that at least three additional suspects managed to evade arrest and remain at large.
A manhunt has been launched to track down the remaining suspects.
No police officers were injured during the operation.
Police investigations into the robbery and attempted murder cases are continuing.
