SAWS warns of flooding, snow and severe cold weather

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that a cut-off low-pressure system will bring cold, wet and windy weather to parts of the country from Wednesday, with heavy rain, flooding and snowfall expected in some areas.

Heavy rainfall is forecast for parts of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape on Wednesday and Thursday, raising the risk of localised flooding, flooded roads and overflowing rivers. Areas between Plettenberg Bay and East London are expected to be among the hardest hit.

Snow is also expected over the mountainous areas of the Eastern Cape, while very cold conditions are forecast for parts of the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape.

SAWS has further warned of damaging winds and rough seas between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay, which could affect small vessels and harbour operations.

Residents are urged to stay informed and exercise caution as the severe weather system moves across the country.
