Tommy Dell injured in Mbombela crash that killed two

South African country music veteran Tommy Dell is recovering in hospital after being injured in a crash on the R40 in Mbombela that claimed the lives of two women.

The collision happened at about 10pm on Saturday when a Honda sedan carrying Dell and the two women collided with a bakkie while travelling towards Barberton.

The two women died at the scene, while occupants of the bakkie were injured.

Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi confirmed the fatalities.

The crash happened shortly after Dell performed at a Country Evening at Bosjol in Mbombela.

According to Mmusi, the Honda was turning onto Hermansburg Road when it collided with the bakkie, which was travelling from Barberton towards Mbombela.

Police have opened a case of two counts of culpable homicide and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Dell, known as “The Killer”, is a veteran of the South African country music scene. He represented the country in Nashville, United States, in the 1980s and has released gold- and platinum-selling albums.

Mmusi has urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly during wet weather, when visibility can be reduced and roads become slippery.
