President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned that those who kill police officers will face the full force of the law, describing attacks on members of the SAPS as attacks on the democratic state.
Ramaphosa was speaking as the country paid tribute to 12 police officers who died in the line of duty.
He questioned what kind of society targets those tasked with protecting communities, stressing that violence against police officers cannot be treated as an attack on individuals alone.
According to Ramaphosa, killing a police officer undermines the authority of the state, the rule of law and South Africa’s constitutional order.
He warned criminals who target police that they are effectively challenging the authority of the Republic.
Ramaphosa also welcomed progress in investigations into the killings, saying several suspects had been arrested and convictions secured, with some offenders handed life sentences.
He reiterated that both those who carry out attacks on police officers and those who plan them must be held accountable.
