A gruesome murder case has sent shockwaves through the Libode community after a 28-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his 29-year-old girlfriend and later returning her body to her family.
The suspect, from Rainy Locality in Nyandeni A/A, was taken into custody after police were alerted in the early hours of Saturday morning. The woman had been reported missing, with the suspect identified as the last person seen with her.
According to police, the man allegedly killed the victim at an undisclosed location before burying her in a shallow grave. Following pressure from the victim’s relatives, he reportedly dug up the body and transported it back to them in a wheelbarrow.
Authorities say a confession has been obtained, with the suspect allegedly admitting to the murder and burial.
He is expected to appear in the Libode Magistrate’s Court, where he will face a charge of murder. A pointing-out is also scheduled as part of the ongoing investigation.
OR Tambo District Commissioner Major General Norman Modishana condemned the incident and called on communities to act swiftly when loved ones go missing.
“Immediate reporting of missing persons can save many innocent lives,” he said.
