President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the Western Cape High Court’s decision to temporarily suspend Parliament’s Section 89 impeachment proceedings against him.
The court granted the President’s urgent application on Friday, 24 July 2026, ordering that the impeachment inquiry be paused until it has ruled on a separate legal challenge to the independent panel report into the Phala Phala game farm scandal.
Ramaphosa had argued that Parliament should not proceed with the impeachment process while the validity of the panel’s findings is still being challenged before the courts.
Responding to the judgment, the Presidency said the President respects the High Court’s ruling and remains committed to South Africa’s constitutional principles.
“The President reaffirms his respect for judicial independence and the separation of powers enshrined in our Constitution. The President will continue to cooperate with and abide by processes of accountability,” the Presidency said in a statement.
The ruling temporarily brings Parliament’s impeachment process to a standstill pending the outcome of the President’s review application.
