President Cyril Ramaphosa has cleared Gauteng South Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Andrew Chauke to remain in office after an independent inquiry found no evidence that he was unfit for the position.
The Presidency announced on Thursday that the Nkabinde Panel of Enquiry, established in September 2025 under the National Prosecuting Authority Act, exonerated Chauke following an investigation into allegations concerning his fitness to hold office.
Chauke, who was suspended in July 2025 pending the outcome of the inquiry, was found not to have acted unlawfully in the Cato Manor matter. The panel also ruled that his decision to provisionally withdraw murder charges against former Crime Intelligence head Richard Mdluli and refer the case to an inquest was not irrational.
The Presidency said President Ramaphosa was satisfied there was no basis to conclude that Chauke was unfit to serve and thanked both Chauke and the inquiry panel for their cooperation and work throughout the process.
