Two suspected extortionists killed in shootout with Police in Cala

Two suspected extortionists, aged 35 and 45, were fatally wounded during a shootout with police at Cala Reserve near Tikana stop in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday afternoon, 21 October 2026.

According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 15:45 after members of the National Investigation Unit (NIU) from Mthatha acted on information about three men who were allegedly on their way to collect extortion money in Cala.

Police reportedly spotted a vehicle matching the description of the one they were looking for at Cala Reserve and attempted to stop it. However, the occupants allegedly opened fire on the officers, who retaliated, fatally wounding two of the suspects.

The third suspect managed to flee the scene, and a search for him is underway.

A 9mm pistol and two live rounds of ammunition were allegedly found next to one of the deceased men, who was inside the passenger seat of a Toyota Avanza. Another pistol was recovered next to the second deceased man, who was found lying beside the road.

Both firearms were seized for further investigation to establish whether they may be linked to other unresolved criminal activities.

Police confirmed that two inquest dockets, as well as cases of possession of unlicensed firearms and attempted murder, were opened at Cala Police Station following the incident.
