A 27-year-old professional soccer player is under police investigation after authorities uncovered evidence suggesting his reported kidnapping may have been staged.
The player’s family reported him missing at the Witbank Police Station on 5 July after receiving a ransom demand from an unknown caller using his cellphone. Detectives immediately launched a search.
However, the player returned home unharmed later that day after allegedly being missing for seven days. Police say no ransom was paid and preliminary investigations indicate the kidnapping may never have happened.
The matter remains under investigation, with police considering charges, including defeating the ends of justice.
Acting Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi warned that staging crimes wastes valuable police resources and will not be tolerated.
