Minister of Sport Zizi Kodwa will meet with the South African Football Players Union on Tuesday to resolve the gender payment gap between the players and the South African Football Association. This is after players from the national women’s football team boycotted their friendly match against Botswana, just days before the African champions are expected to jet off for their first FIFA Women’s World Cup match in New Zealand.
According to Sports Ministry spokesperson Litha Mpondwana the meeting with SAPFU will consider issues pertaining to the government’s commitment and support to the team, the teams working, welfare and health conditions, including transparency and accountability related to the signing of contracts
“Women’s development, women’s agency and voice, and women’s dignity in sport remain at the centre of the government’s gender equality agenda. Women players are assured of a safe environment to raise their concerns without fear of victimisation.”
The boycott was prompted by payment issues that have since been marred by allegations of sexism as well as the inadequate venue that was afforded to them for their match.
