A major police crackdown across the Amathole District has resulted in the arrest of more than 200 suspects in just one week, as law enforcement intensifies efforts to combat rising crime in the region.
Police confirmed that 214 suspects were arrested between 8 and 14 May 2026 during district-wide operations targeting serious and violent crimes.
The suspects were arrested for a range of offences, including murder, assault, theft and traffic-related violations.
Among those arrested were 42 motorists who were fined a combined total of R45 300 for various traffic offences during roadblocks and vehicle inspections conducted across the district.
Acting Amathole District Commissioner, Zinikele Freddie, commended officers for their relentless efforts in removing criminals from communities.
“Most arrests were effected by the detectives, who were working on active criminal cases,” Brigadier Freddie said.
Police said the operations form part of ongoing efforts to restore law and order and ensure safer communities across the district.
