Suspended National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and his co-accused are back in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday in connection with the controversial R228 million Medicare24 tender.
Masemola faces four charges of contravening the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). The State alleges he failed to fulfil his duties as an accounting officer after irregularities were identified in the tender.
The case involves a group of senior police officials facing charges linked to the awarding of the SAPS health-services contract to Medicare24 Tshwane District, a company linked to businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
At least R50 million was paid before the contract was cancelled in May 2025, according to evidence previously presented.
The matter was postponed in June to allow prosecutors to amend the charge sheet following the separation of Matlala’s case.
Matlala had entered into a plea agreement with the State and agreed to become a State witness, but later withdrew his decision to testify. His plea agreement was consequently rendered invalid, and the State is expected to formally rejoin him to the case.
Masemola has denied the allegations against him.
