The Eastern Cape Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Investigation unit has arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with a deadly mass shooting that left three people dead and six others injured in Wells Estate, Gqeberha.
Police confirmed that Lukhanyo Mekula was arrested after handing himself over at a police station on Monday, accompanied by his lawyer.
The mass shooting occurred on 26 April 2026 in Msinga Street following an alleged confrontation between occupants of two vehicles. According to police, one of the drivers reportedly left the scene after threatening to return.
Moments later, the suspect allegedly confronted a homeowner outside his residence before opening fire. Police say the gunman then entered the house and continued shooting at people inside.
The brutal attack claimed the lives of Maxhosa Nombana (30), Mxolisi Maswana (60) and 19-year-old Donricque Scheepers, who later died in hospital. Six other victims suffered serious injuries.
Investigators have also linked Mekula to a separate 2023 case involving attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and malicious damage to property linked to the hijacking of a state vehicle in Motherwell.
Police said a J50 warrant for Mekula’s arrest had already been issued by the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court before he handed himself over.
He appeared in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court on 19 May 2026, where he was formally charged.
