A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of an eight-year-old girl at her mother’s home in Dewetsdorp.
The accused was found guilty by Smithfield Magistrate’s Court Magistrate Ingrid Matroos following a trial relating to the incident on 2 December 2022.
The court heard that the victim’s mother left her daughter at home with her brother at about 10:00 that day. When she returned at around 14:00, she saw a boy known to her as Motiko running out of the house.
Upon entering, she found her daughter getting dressed. Her brother was not at home, and she noticed that the child’s braids had been cut off.
The mother asked her daughter what had happened, and the child told her that Motiko had undressed and raped her before cutting her hair with scissors. The matter was reported to the police, and the suspect was arrested on 5 December 2022.
The accused was convicted of rape in terms of Section 3 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act 32 of 2007 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000. His details will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders, and he was declared unfit to work with children in terms of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005.
