Attorney jailed 10 years for stealing R39 million from client trust fund

An 82-year-old attorney, Solomon Slom, has been sentenced to an effective 10 years’ direct imprisonment after being convicted on 145 counts of theft and 145 counts of money laundering.

The Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court heard that while working at Fluxman Attorneys, Slom stole R39 million from a client’s trust account containing about R45 million. The money was transferred into his personal bank accounts through more than 140 transactions between 2019 and 2024.

“The accused will serve an effective sentence of 10 years’ direct imprisonment.”

The Hawks said the case followed an internal audit that exposed the fraud, leading to Slom’s resignation, arrest in August 2024, conviction in June 2026, and sentencing on 8 July 2026.

In terms of Section 280 of the Criminal Procedure Act, the court ordered that the sentences run concurrently, meaning Slom will serve an effective sentence of 10 years behind bars.
