The African National Congress has officially opened its mayoral nomination process as it prepares for the 2026 local government elections, allowing both members and non-members to put forward candidates for leadership positions in the country’s eight metropolitan municipalities.
For the first time in recent cycles, South Africans who are not affiliated with the party are also permitted to nominate themselves or others, a move the ANC says is aimed at broadening participation and attracting capable leadership at local government level.
The announcement comes amid ongoing challenges in many municipalities across South Africa, where issues such as deteriorating infrastructure, inconsistent service delivery, and financial mismanagement have placed local governance under intense scrutiny.
The party says the selection process will prioritise candidates who demonstrate the ability to restore basic services, improve governance, and rebuild public trust in municipalities. It also forms part of its broader effort to stabilise metro administrations ahead of the 2026 polls.
