Two women aged 57 and 61 have been arrested for allegedly impersonating an Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) official and attempting to collect voting material at Ngcobo Police Station.
According to Eastern Cape police, the incident happened at approximately 04:30 on Monday, 2 November 2026, when the two suspects arrived at the police station and claimed they had been sent by the presiding officer to collect voting material.
However, the presiding officer was already at the station and had not authorised anyone to collect the material.
The suspects were identified before leaving the station, and the voting material was confiscated.
Police confirmed that the two women were arrested on Tuesday, 3 November, and are being processed.
A case has been opened under Section 68(d) of Act 27 of 2000 for impersonating an IEC official.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata condemned the incident, warning that any interference with the electoral process would not be tolerated.
“We will not tolerate any interference with the electoral process. The arrest of the two suspects demonstrates our commitment to upholding the integrity of the elections. Anyone who impersonates an IEC official will face the full might of the law,” said Ncata.
Police said further details would be communicated in due course.
