Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth has urged employers to give workers time to exercise their democratic right to vote in the 2026 Local Government Elections on Wednesday, 4 November.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared Election Day a public holiday to allow eligible South Africans to participate in the elections.
Meth said the right to vote was a cornerstone of democracy and called on employers and employees to work together to ensure workers could cast their ballots without disrupting business operations.
She encouraged employees to communicate their voting arrangements with employers in advance to allow proper planning.
The department also urged workplaces to promote active citizenship and support democratic participation, saying every eligible South African should be encouraged to make their voice heard through the ballot box.
