Actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana is facing a court appearance after she was allegedly caught driving at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone along the N2 near Ellingham in KwaZulu-Natal.
According to the KwaZulu Natal department of transport, the actress was arrested by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team from Park Rynie during the #NenzaniLaEzweni road safety operation.
Mqokiyana, who was driving a BMW X3 SUV, appeared in court on 19 October 2026. She is expected to return to the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 28 October.
The alleged speeding incident comes as authorities intensify road safety operations ahead of the festive season, warning motorists that traffic law enforcement will continue.
Between 15 and 21 October, RTI and Operation Shanela teams stopped 12,073 vehicles and charged 1,719 motorists during enforcement operations.
The teams recorded 421 speeding charges, while 87 motorists were charged with driving without valid driving licences. A further 141 motorists were charged with failing to wear seatbelts.
Authorities also identified 112 unlicensed vehicles and impounded 140 vehicles for operating without the required permits.
The crackdown is set to continue, with more than 26 multidisciplinary #NenzaniLaEzweni operations planned between 22 and 28 October, alongside 15 additional operations specifically targeting drunk driving.
The provincial transport authorities have warned that there will be no leniency for traffic offenders during the festive season, as enforcement efforts intensify to improve road safety.
