National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader and suspended Member of Parliament Fadiel Adams is expected back in the Pinetown Regional Court on Friday, 11 September, where his fraud and defeating the administration of justice case is set to proceed.
Adams’ matter was transferred from the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court to the Regional Court last month after the State confirmed that investigations had been completed. He is facing three counts of fraud and two counts of defeating the administration of justice.
The charges relate to two visits Adams allegedly made to the Westville Correctional Centre on 2 November 2024 and 24 January 2025. The State alleges that he represented himself as acting in his capacity as an MP and obtained access to the facility, despite not having an official parliamentary mandate to conduct the visits.
During the visits, Adams allegedly interviewed and recorded two awaiting-trial inmates. One was linked to the investigation into the 2017 murder of former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa, while the other was former Political Killings Task Team sergeant Bonginkosi Dlamini, who was facing allegations involving interference with evidence in another murder investigation.
The State alleges that Adams also misrepresented his status to authorities, including SAPS, eThekwini Metro Police and correctional officials, resulting in him being provided with an escort from King Shaka International Airport to Westville Correctional Centre.
Adams has denied wrongdoing and has maintained that his actions were linked to efforts to investigate allegations of police misconduct. He previously said he was ready to face the charges and indicated that he would challenge aspects of his arrest and detention through civil litigation.
He remains out on R10,000 bail.
