The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Eastern Cape has written to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) demanding clarity on whether the African National Congress (ANC) submitted all its candidate lists before the deadline on Friday, 28 August 2026.
The request follows reports alleging that the ANC failed to submit some of its ward and proportional representation (PR) candidate lists before the prescribed deadline.
The municipalities reportedly affected include Ingquza Hill Local Municipality, Port St Johns Local Municipality, Walter Sisulu Local Municipality and Sundays River Valley Local Municipality.
In a letter to the IEC, EFF Eastern Cape Provincial Secretary Simthembile Madikizela said the allegations were serious and could have implications for the integrity, fairness and credibility of the electoral process.
“These allegations are very serious and have direct implications for the integrity, fairness and credibility of the electoral process,” Madikizela wrote.
He said the matter should not be left to political statements, speculation or media reports when the IEC has official records that can establish whether the nominations were submitted on time.
The EFF has therefore asked the IEC to provide a definitive answer to what it described as a straightforward question: whether the ANC successfully submitted its ward candidate nominations and PR candidate lists for the four municipalities before the prescribed 17:00 deadline on 28 August 2026.
IEC Eastern Cape spokesperson Sanda Nodada confirmed that the commission had received the EFF’s letter and said a response would be provided in due course.
Nodada added that more information regarding the candidate submissions would be made public by the IEC at a press conference scheduled for Wednesday.
