New witness to take stand as ‘Cat’ Matlala trial resumes

The trial of Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and four co-accused took another dramatic turn in the Johannesburg High Court on Monday, with a new witness expected to testify in the ongoing trial-within-a-trial.

Matlala, his wife Tsakani, Musa Kekana, Tiego Mabusela and Nthabiseng Nzama are facing 25 charges relating to alleged failed assassination attempts.

The proceedings were briefly disrupted when disbarred lawyer Malesela Teffo, dressed in full legal robes, attempted to intervene in the case.

Teffo told the court that the accused’s constitutional rights had been violated. However, his intervention was rejected, with the accused making it clear that he had no legal standing in the matter.

The accused also argued that Teffo’s actions were unnecessarily delaying the proceedings.

The court subsequently ordered Teffo to leave, allowing the trial-within-a-trial to continue.

Attention has now returned to the evidence before the court, with a new witness expected to take the stand as the State seeks to advance its case.

The proceedings are continuing in the Johannesburg High Court.
