Brown Mogotsi back in court for fourth bail bid

Alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi is back in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday as he continues with his fourth bid for bail.

The matter was previously postponed to allow the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) to provide a report following allegations that Mogotsi had planned to escape from the court’s holding cells.

The State alleges that Mogotsi planned to disguise himself in a Correctional Services uniform and use the opportunity to escape. The allegations were contained in an affidavit by the investigating officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Odendaal.

Mogotsi’s defence was reportedly caught off guard by the allegations, prompting the postponement to allow the court to receive further information from DCS.

Mogotsi is facing charges of defeating the ends of justice in connection with an alleged staged assassination attempt against himself in Vosloorus in November last year.

He has previously been denied bail, including by the Johannesburg High Court.

His latest application is based on what his legal team says are new facts, including proposed addresses where he would stay if released.

The State has opposed his release and raised concerns about the proposed addresses, as well as Mogotsi’s alleged risk of fleeing.
