A 52-year-old suspect has been arrested and 11 firearms recovered following a break-in at a private security company in Newton Park, Gqeberha.
The firearms, recovered within hours of the incident being reported, include nine shotguns and two R1 15 rifles.
SAPS Mount Road responded to the housebreaking at about 07:30 on Monday, 31 August 2026, after employees arrived at the security company’s premises in 2nd Avenue and discovered that the back door had been forced open.
Two safes containing firearms had been removed from the premises. The safes had been secured to the wall.
A Nissan NP200 belonging to the security company was also stolen. The vehicle was later recovered abandoned in Kwadwesi.
Mount Road detectives immediately launched an investigation and followed up on information regarding the stolen firearms.
The Gqeberha Flying Squad acted on the information and proceeded to Gallants Street in Polar Park, where they recovered nine shotguns, two R1 15 rifles and three battle jackets belonging to the security company.
A 52-year-old suspect was arrested during the operation.
He was detained on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and possession of suspected stolen property. He is expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court during the week.
The investigation is continuing as detectives work to establish whether other suspects were involved and to recover any outstanding firearms or stolen property.
