The Eastern Cape Department of Health Ntandokazi Capa has condemned the armed hijacking of four health workers who were travelling to Mzoboshe Village near Qumbu to provide rehabilitation services as part of Mandela Month outreach programmes.
The team was robbed of their vehicle and personal belongings, forcing the cancellation of the outreach programme and leaving the community without essential healthcare services, including wheelchair and assistive device assessments.
MEC Capa described the attack as “an attack on the community itself,” saying the health workers were taking vital services directly to residents. She urged police to ensure those responsible are arrested and called on communities to help protect healthcare workers.
The department said the affected staff will receive psychological support while police continue investigating the hijacking.
