A 26-year-old man has been arrested for stock theft after police intercepted a Toyota Hilux towing a trailer loaded with five suspected stolen cattle on the Lothair–Ermelo Road early on Monday morning.
The arrest followed intelligence received by police, who stopped the vehicle at around 5:45am. The two occupants allegedly failed to provide proof of ownership for the livestock.
Police said one of the suspects fled into a nearby plantation after the vehicle was taken to Lothair SAPS. Despite a search involving drones and tracking dogs, the suspect remains at large.
Police seized the Toyota Hilux, trailer and five head of cattle. The arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Chief Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court on a charge of stock theft, while the Stock Theft Unit continues its investigation.
