The Makhanda High Court has ruled that the ANC’s Eastern Cape Provincial Task Team (PTT) was unlawfully constituted, dealing a major blow to the party’s leadership structures in the province.
The judgment follows a legal challenge brought by disgruntled ANC members who sought to have the PTT’s appointment set aside and its decisions declared invalid. The applicants argued that the task team’s formation did not comply with the party’s constitutional processes and internal regulations.
In its ruling, the court found merit in the challenge and declared the Eastern Cape PTT unlawful. The decision raises questions about the legitimacy of decisions and actions taken by the structure since its establishment.
The case stems from ongoing internal divisions within the ANC in the Eastern Cape, where factional disputes and leadership battles have repeatedly spilled into the courts. The judgment is expected to have significant political implications for the governing party in the province as it grapples with internal instability ahead of key political processes.
