Humansdorp man sentenced to 20 years for violent robberies against young women

A 20-year-old Humansdorp man has been sentenced to a combined 20 years in prison for two violent robberies committed against young women in separate incidents in the Eastern Cape.

The Humansdorp Regional Court sentenced Bradley Mafomi on 15 May 2026 to five years’ direct imprisonment for robbery with a weapon other than a firearm and 15 years’ direct imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

According to police, the first incident involved an 18-year-old woman who was walking with friends when Mafomi allegedly approached them armed with a knife, searched their pockets and stole their cellphones.

Mafomi was arrested on 12 September 2025 and made his first court appearance on 2 October 2025. He was later released on bail on 25 October 2025.

Police said just four days after being granted bail, Mafomi allegedly committed another robbery in Humansdorp, where he forcibly stole a cellphone from a 26-year-old woman. He was arrested the following day and remained behind bars until his sentencing.

Acting Sarah Baartman District Commissioner Brigadier Asogran Naidoo welcomed the sentence and praised the investigating officers for their work.

“This 15-year direct imprisonment sentence is a testament to the relentless efforts of our investigating officers, who built airtight cases,” said Naidoo.

“By taking this violent individual off the streets without the option of a fine or a suspended sentence, we have made our community safer today,” he added.
