MATATIELE – Tributes continue to pour in from institutions and members of the South African arts community following the death of internationally acclaimed soprano singer Khayakazi Madlala.
Madlala, 32, passed away on Tuesday after a short illness while working in Cape Town. Born in Maluti, Matatiele, in 1994, she leaves behind a remarkable legacy of outstanding performances that took her from South African stages to the prestigious Royal Opera House.
The late soprano received her musical training at the Gauteng Opera Academy and North-West University. She was also a member of the Opera for Peace Academy and the Renée Fleming Song Studio.
In a statement, the Unisa Music Foundation described Madlala as a distinguished South African soprano whose immense talent and warm personality inspired everyone who knew her.
The foundation highlighted her memorable performances at the 3rd Unisa National Voice Competition and the 7th Unisa International Voice Competition, where she won silver medals at both events. Her performances were widely praised by adjudicators and fellow performers alike.
“Khayakazi was an extraordinary musician and a beautiful person who will be sorely missed. We send our sincere condolences to her family, friends and loved ones,” the foundation said.
Meanwhile, the North-West University School of Music expressed deep sorrow over what it described as the heartbreaking loss of one of its own.
“Khayakazi was more than an exceptional musician and vocalist. She was a light within our school, a young woman whose talent, grace, warmth and presence touched everyone around her,” the school said in a statement.
“Her voice carried beauty, power and deep emotion, and her artistry left an unforgettable mark on every stage she stepped onto.”
The institution further praised her dedication, passion and excellence, saying it had proudly watched her grow into an artist of remarkable promise.
“Our hearts are broken alongside her family, friends, lecturers, colleagues and fellow students. The loss is immeasurable,” the statement added.
A close relative, Malungisa Hans, told The Informer that discussions are underway within the family regarding the possibility of Madlala’s funeral being held in Matatiele. Further details are expected to be announced in due course.
