Three alleged suspects were shot and killed during a gun battle with police in Nyamazana Informal Settlement, KwaDwesi, Gqeberha, on Wednesday morning.
The shootout unfolded at around 6am as members of the South African Police Service’s National Intervention Unit were tracking a suspect wanted in connection with a murder committed in KwaDwesi in June 2026.
According to police, officers initially searched the suspect’s home but found no one. As they were travelling back to KwaDwesi Police Station, they received fresh information that the suspect had returned to the house.
When officers went back to the property, they allegedly came under fire from the occupants. Police returned fire, triggering a shootout in which three men were fatally wounded. They were declared dead at the scene.
Police recovered two unlicensed pistols and ammunition from the scene. The firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in other crimes.
No police officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
