Security has been tightened in Durban ahead of the 46th Ordinary SADC Summit, with authorities warning that anyone attempting to use planned demonstrations to cause disruption or commit criminal acts will face the full force of the law.
National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) chairperson Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili said on Tuesday that authorities were monitoring several planned marches and demonstrations expected during the high-level gathering.
While acknowledging that peaceful protest is a constitutional right, Mosikili said there would be no tolerance for intimidation, vandalism or attempts to interfere with the summit.
The security operation includes public order policing, intelligence, crime prevention and traffic management, with NATJOINTS saying it has deployed its maximum available resources.
The warning comes as Durban prepares to host 12 Heads of State and Government attending the summit.
Meanwhile, security concerns have also been raised over access to the summit venue after a Zimbabwean national was arrested for allegedly attempting to obtain accreditation while posing as a performing artist.
Mosikili said the man claimed his documents had been stolen but was unable to provide valid documentation.
Authorities have stressed that accreditation is strictly controlled and cannot be transferred or shared.
“No accreditation, no access,” Mosikili said.
Mosikili warned that security forces would act decisively, proportionately and within the law against anyone who threatens public safety or attempts to disrupt the summit.
