Operation Shanela resulted in the arrest of 25 undocumented foreign nationals and 17 motorists for drunken driving during an overnight crackdown over the past few days in the Buffalo City Metro.
The operation, led by Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata and District Commissioner Major General Christopher Wright, brought together SAPS, Traffic, Home Affairs and the Eastern Cape Liquor Board. MEC for Community Safety Xolile Nqata also attended.
Police conducted patrols, roadblocks and inspections across KuGompo City and surrounding areas, targeting serious crimes and enforcing liquor, traffic and immigration laws. A total of 168 people and 70 vehicles were searched, while eight liquor outlets were found compliant.
Home Affairs officials screened 30 suspected undocumented individuals, arresting 25 after verification. Other arrests included cases of drug possession, ammunition, and failure to safeguard a firearm, with additional drug-related arrests in Kidds Beach.
Authorities also recovered drugs, ammunition and cash.
Ncata said the operation proves there is “no sanctuary for lawlessness,” while Nqata praised officers, saying such actions send a strong message that crime will not be tolerated.
