Kaizer Chiefs coach pleased with Khanyisa Mayo’s progress after emotional breakthrough goal

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef said the club is pleased with Khanyisa Mayo’s progress and believes the striker will play an important role going forward, despite a difficult start to his loan spell.

Khanyisa Mayo has boosted his chances of securing a permanent move to Kaizer Chiefs after finding the net in their emphatic 4-1 victory over Magesi FC at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

The 27-year-old forward’s journey has not been smooth, as injuries disrupted his early months at the club following his loan move from CR Belouizdad. Those setbacks limited his game time and saw him struggle to break into the match-day squad even after returning to full fitness.

However, his persistence paid off in Polokwane, where he was included in the travelling squad and came off the bench to score the final goal in a dominant Chiefs performance. The emotional strike marked a turning point in his spell, helping secure a fifth consecutive Betway Premiership win for the Soweto giants, who remain firmly in third place on the log.

Chiefs’ position in the league sees them chasing consistency at the top end of the table, while also attempting to close the gap on second-placed Orlando Pirates, who are 10 points ahead with a game in hand. Meanwhile, Polokwane City continue to fight for stability in mid-table as the season intensifies.

Mayo’s goal was met with emotional celebrations, as he covered his mouth and pointed skyward—an apparent response to criticism surrounding his performances and expectations linked to the legacy of his father, former Chiefs striker Patrick Mayo. The Chiefs bench erupted in celebration, with players and staff rushing onto the pitch, while the striker later dropped to his knees in a reflective moment after the final whistle.

Looking ahead, Chiefs will aim to extend their winning streak when they face Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday at 3pm.
