Four boys had a frightening brush with danger after rising river waters trapped them on a riverbank while they were fishing in Mqanduli, Eastern Cape, on Tuesday.
The boys reportedly became stranded when heavy rainfall caused water levels to rise, cutting off their escape routes and leaving them in a potentially life-threatening situation.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene to assist with the rescue as severe weather continued to batter parts of the province.
King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality spokesperson Olwethu Mabovula said the situation was serious, with rescue efforts complicated by poor weather conditions.
Mabovula said a helicopter could not be deployed because of low-lying clouds.
The incident highlights the dangers posed by swollen rivers during periods of heavy rainfall, when water levels can rise rapidly and cut off access to safety.
The OR Tambo District is among the areas affected by widespread flooding, with overflowing bridges, flooded roads and damaged infrastructure disrupting communities.
Residents have been urged to avoid crossing flooded rivers and bridges, as even seemingly shallow water can pose a serious danger.
Authorities have also advised people living in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and motorists to postpone non-essential journeys until conditions improve.
