Former president Thabo Mbeki is expected to appear before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Cases Inquiry on Monday, 19 October, where he is expected to face questions about allegations of political interference in apartheid-era prosecutions.
His testimony comes as the inquiry examines claims that political discussions between ANC leaders and former apartheid-era security officials contributed to delays in prosecuting crimes referred for further investigation by the original TRC.
The inquiry, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Sisi Khampepe, is investigating whether political considerations undermined efforts to hold those responsible for apartheid-era atrocities accountable.
Mbeki’s appearance is expected to shed light on his knowledge of the alleged discussions and the decisions taken by political leaders during the period under investigation.
The inquiry has heard allegations that an informal understanding was reached to avoid certain prosecutions. However, claims surrounding the alleged agreement have been disputed.
Former president Jacob Zuma is also expected to appear before the inquiry, although his testimony has been postponed following his hospitalisation.
The inquiry is expected to submit its findings to President Cyril Ramaphosa by 18 December 2026.
