African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Member (NEC), Andile Lungisa says he is set to return to the party’s candidate list for the upcoming local government elections after his exclusion sparked a legal challenge.
Lungisa had approached the courts in a bid to challenge his removal from the ANC’s list after being identified as one of the party’s potential mayoral candidates for Nelson Mandela Bay.
However, he now says the matter has been addressed internally, with the ANC’s National Working Committee agreeing that his name should be restored to the proportional representation (PR) list.
According to Lungisa, the decision follows discussions about the wishes of ANC structures in Nelson Mandela Bay.
“The national chair spoke on the will of the people, or structures of Nelson Mandela Bay, and my name will be brought back,” he said.
Lungisa also pointed to the electoral processes that allow political parties to make changes to their candidate lists, saying there was still an opportunity for the ANC to formalise his inclusion.
He said parties could make amendments shortly after the election declaration and again before councillors assume office.
“There’s no train smash. That’s why we’re saying that all of us, let’s go and vote in Nelson Mandela Bay and vote for the ANC,” Lungisa said.
