The Eastern Cape Department of Education has launched an investigation into allegations of corporal punishment at Khanya High School in Tlokoeng, where several Grade 12 learners are reportedly among those allegedly beaten by teachers.
The investigation follows a report published by The Informer last week after it received complaints that a number of learners had allegedly been injured during the incident.
According to reports, teachers allegedly used a pipe to hit learners on their hands and buttocks. The affected learners are Grade 12 pupils who are currently attending a school camp aimed at preparing them for the upcoming Senior Certificate final examinations.
It is alleged that the learners were punished after bathing in classrooms instead of using the school toilets. Reports suggest that some learners avoided using the toilets because of the cold weather and concerns about possible infectious diseases.
Monwabisi Mbangeni, Chief Director of Education responsible for the Tlokoeng area, confirmed that an investigation into the allegations had begun.
“The School Governing Body and the team from Bisho are going to meet today (Monday) at the school premises to continue with the investigations,” Mbangeni said.
He added that parents, learners and the school management had already met and reached their own decision on the matter.
Mbangeni said that, so far, three teachers were allegedly implicated in the incident.
The department is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged corporal punishment and determine whether disciplinary action should be taken against those found to have been involved.
