An offender who escaped from the Rooigrond Correctional Centre in the North West has been arrested within 72 hours following a manhunt by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS).
DCS National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale confirmed on Thursday that Edward Khomotso Madiba was apprehended at a flat in Brits after passing through several locations, including Borakalalo Game Reserve, Lebotloane and Damonsville.
Madiba is serving a 20-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping and parole violation.
He has been transferred to Kgosi Mampuru II C-Max in Pretoria.
At least eight correctional officials have been suspended pending an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his escape.
Thobakgale warned that escaped offenders will be traced and returned to custody.
