Gqeberha man sentenced to two life terms for rape and attempted murder

A 64-year-old man, Teyise Bako, has been sentenced to two life terms for raping and attempting to murder his former girlfriend in Polar Park in February 2025.

Bako broke into the 49-year-old victim’s home on 26 February 2025. When she fled, he caught her and stabbed her in the neck before forcing her to his nearby home, where he raped her.

She reported the attack to SAPS Chatty the following morning, leading to Bako’s arrest.

He was convicted on 24 March 2026 and sentenced on 1 September to life imprisonment for rape and attempted murder, with additional sentences for housebreaking, kidnapping and assault. All sentences will run concurrently.

Bako was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and will be registered as a sexual offender.

Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo welcomed the sentence, saying it sends a strong message that gender-based violence and violence against women will not be tolerated.
