Eastern Cape police arrested hundreds of suspects and seized illegal firearms and ammunition during Operation Shanela operations conducted across the province from 31 August to 6 September 2026.
The operations resulted in 43 arrests for possession of unlicensed firearms, 41 for drug dealing, 17 for possession of ammunition and 113 undocumented foreign nationals.
Police also arrested 54 suspects for burglary and 70 for driving under the influence, while others were detained for murder, attempted murder, rape, robbery and assault.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata said the results demonstrated the commitment of police members, as well as the cooperation of communities in the fight against crime.
“The possession of unlicensed firearms continue to fuel serious and violent crimes, and we will continue to use all available resources to ensure that these weapons are removed from circulation and that those responsible are facing the full might of the law,” said Ncata.
